Why have I been referred?

Children are usually referred by a doctor, teacher, school psychologist, or other professional because of one or more problems, such as:

  • Difficulties with learning
  • Trouble paying attention or remembering
  • Delays in motor skills, speech, or problem solving skills
  • Problems controlling behavior or acting out
  • Brain injury from an accident or illness that may have changed how the child thinks and behaves

Common reasons for referral include:

  • Developmental delay in one or more areas (speech, motor, socialization, self-care skills)
  • Autism/Asperger’s
  • Learning disability (LD)
  • Memory disorder
  • ADHD (formerly ADD)
  • Alcohol/drug abuse
  • Concussion/brain injury
  • Seizures
  • Brain tumor
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Depression
  • Conduct (behavior) problems
